Teacher Appreciation Week

What do teachers do?  What don’t they do may be the easier question.

This week schools across the nation are celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week.  Through hand written notes, heart felt gestures, and many other creative ways, teachers are being celebrated. They are being recognized for the time, passion, patience, caring, love, skill, energy, and the many other things that they give to their students every day.

Our Alward Parent Club celebrated teachers this morning by hosting a coffee bar.  Teachers were treated to  a latte, cappuccino, or a coffee of their choice courtesy of Mad Cap Coffee of Grand Rapids.  Our students added to the celebration with hugs, thank you’s, and some hand written notes.  There is more in store for teachers throughout the week!

Please join me, our Alward PTC, and our students in thanking our teachers for all that they do.  It is their dedication, love of students, love of learning, and commitment to families that creates the learning rich environment our students experience every day.

Thank you teachers.  We celebrate you this week, however, we appreciate you far beyond the reach of a school year.

With Gratitude,

Louise Moore

ALWARD ACTION 4/28/17

OFFICE NEWS……. Well…… let me first start with an apology….. I am very sorry it has taken this long for a new Alward Action!  Things have been a little busy around here since our return from Spring Break (which feels like it was forever ago!).  5th graders are finished with their M-Step testing, only 3rd and 4th grade to go on that.  Our 5th graders visited Baldwin Street Middle School this week……. big day for these students!  Geeesh….. we are a hoppin’ place!  I would like to say things might quiet down some, but unfortunately it is that time of year and everything seems to fly by.  We still have a lot of work going on, M-Step testing, teachers and principal working on class lists for next year, field trips and a Spring Book Fair coming up!

Please make sure to check all the Upcoming Dates at the end of the Alward Action.  There are field trips, camp, field days, etc on the calendar that you should make note of.  Please remember to send sack lunches if necessary.  : )  We would also like to note that we are NOT having our annual Memorial Day Program.  With the construction taking place at Alward, we are just not able to make this happen.  We do apologize and we are sure it will be back on the schedule for next year.  Thank you for your understanding.

One very important bit of information that I would like to get out to parents……. Our FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL will be PRIOR to the Labor Day weekend!  The first day of school for students in the 17/18 school year will be TUESDAY, AUGUST 29.  Please make note as well, that our Open House dates have changed…… PK/K Open House will be on Wednesday, August 23 and Grades 1-5 Open House will be Thursday, August 24.  The Open Houses will begin at 6:30pm.

EARLY RELEASE…… Our next early release is FRIDAY, May 12.  This time will be used by teachers for professional development and professional conversations in regard to meeting the needs of all students.

M-STEP TESTING FOR GRADES 3 and 4…..  To the parents of 3rd AND 4th grade students.  M-Step testing is here.  With that being said, we would like to get the testing dates out to you in hopes of having all the students in school on the days of testing.  We ask for your help in not scheduling appointments or pulling your student if at all possible on these testing dates.  Our hopes are that with giving you these dates in advance that will help all of us.  Thank you for your cooperation in regards to these testing dates.

4th Grade M-Step Dates ~ MAY 2-5

3rd Grade M-Step Dates ~ MAY 16-18

PLEASE VOTE…….. TUESDAY, MAY 2………ANNUAL OPERATING MILLAGE RENEWAL PROPOSAL….. On May 2, voters will be asked whether to renew Hudsonville Public School’s non-homestead millage.  This is an annual renewal voters have approved for the past 22 years and would generate approximately $4.2 million dollars of operating revenue for our school district.

It is important to note this is NOT a tax on primary residences and is NOT a new tax.  It is a proposal to continue the existing 18 mill assessment on only non-homestead properties such as industrial and commercial property and second homes.  State law requires school districts levy this tax or lose a significant portion of their state per-pupil foundation allowance funding, which would potentially require cuts to student programs.  For more information, including ballot language, please click here.

ALWARD ACTION 3/3/17

OFFICE NEWS……. Wow! What a FANTASTIC week here at Alward!  As many of you know, March is “Reading Month” AND it is Dr. Seuss’ birthday.  In honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday, students met in their Character Ed teams (groups of K-5th grade students and an Alward Staff Leader) to decorate classroom, office, and library doors throughout the building.  The doors look AMAZING as the students and staff did a spectacular job!  It is fun to walk through the halls and see the creative designs on the doors, and be reminded that Alward is a community of readers.  Way to go Alward students!!

Along with decorating the doors, we are celebrating “March is Reading Month” by having the students bring in new and/or gently used books to benefit local children in need.  We are doing this in hopes of sharing the gift of reading with others in our community.  The book drive will run from MARCH 3-MARCH 24.   The Character Ed team that donates the most books will get a special celebration….. so bring in those books!!!

S.O.A.R.. II (STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES TO ACHIEVE RESULTS)…….
Upcoming Survey……. For the past three years, we have been working on accomplishing our district’s long-range planning goals outlined in S.O.A.R. II (Strategic Objectives to Achieve Results).  Teams of teachers, administrators and support staff have been focused on specific goals in the areas of Human Services, Operations, and Teaching and Learning.  S.O.A.R. II points of pride include, but are not limited to, the development and phased implementation of an elementary STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) special, saving millions of taxpayer dollars by renovating a former elementary school, renovating all buildings’ front office areas to provide an extra level of security, and expanding community education offerings.  A complete report of the many accomplishments can be found on our district’s website.

To continue our great tradition of excellence at Hudsonville Public Schools and to elevate our successes, we are asking for your help in the development of our next strategic plan: S.O.A.R. III.  We have completed the first phase of development (Focus Groups) and are very thankful for the wealth of information we received.  Our website contains a summary of findings based on this phase.

We are now entering the second phase in the research; a Randomized Needs Assessment Survey.  If you receive an invitation to participate, PLEASE consider taking part in helping us set the direction for the next three years.

Later in February, we will open the survey to parents and community members who were not part of the random selection process.  We will email the link to the survey when it becomes available.

SNOW DAY PROCEDURE FOR HOT LUNCH ~ With snow days a possibility now, the food service program would like to remind parents and students about what will happen if school is closed due to weather. If the district is closed, the menu that was supposed to be served on the snow day will be moved to the next school day.  An example: if school is canceled on Tuesday due to weather, Tuesday’s menu will be served on Wednesday and the menu that was scheduled for Wednesday will be completely canceled.  Because of our computer lunch account system, there will be no need to issue credits and your student will still be able to order a lunch if they need one. ALWARD ACTION 1/20/17

OFFICE NEWS……. Well we did it, we made it through our first FIVE day week since Christmas break!   Things have been smooth sailing here at Alward. We can now enjoy the quiet months of January and February before the craziness of spring starts.  As you know, spring brings M-Step, book fair, parent/teacher conferences, 5th grade transitions, and much, much more.

As we are relaxing, please take a moment to celebrate with your child and with the Alward teaching staff.  Alward Elementary is once again a Reward School as reported on our  Accountability Scorecard put out by the state.  Great job Alward staff and students.

CONSTRUCTION….As you can see, Alward is quickly changing.  Our 4 new Kindergarten classrooms, two additional grade level classrooms, and the new office, music room, art room, and gymnasium are all taking shape.  Students and staff have been flexible and patient with sounds, temporary walls, and exposed hallway ceilings (which we view as our temporary “industrial” look).  We can’t wait to see where the construction will be by spring.

EARLY RELEASE…… Our next early release is FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 3.  This time will be used by teachers for professional development and professional conversations in regard to meeting the needs of all students.

VALENTINE PARTIES…. will be on TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 14.  Times vary by class so please make sure to check teacher blogs for the exact time.

JANUARY LUNCH INFO………jan2017hudelemdeposit-slip

KINDERGARTEN ROUND UP……… The date has been set for Kindergarten Registration for the upcoming 17/18 school year.  The Registration meeting will be held on THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 2 @ 7pm at Alward.  There will be 10am session as well at South Elementary for those who are not able to make it to the evening session.  REMEMBER….. your child MUST turn 5 by DECEMBER 1, 2017 to register them for PK OR Kindergarten.  PLEASE NOTE….. If your child turns FIVE between SEPTEMBER 2 and DECEMBER 1 you MUST fill out the Kindergarten Waiver Request that is in the Registration packet.

PK/Kindergarten Registration packets are available in the office.  In order for the registration packets to be turned back in you must have all of the information needed.  The items that are required are listed on the front cover letter of the Registration packet.

PK/K SCREENING DATES…… We will have screening for incoming PK/K students on February 8, 9 and 10.  It is RECOMMENDED that if the child turns 5 AFTER JUNE 1 they should be tested.  It is REQUIRED the child be tested if they turn 5 AFTER SEPTEMBER 1.  You may call the office at 669-6700 any time between 9am and 3pm to schedule screening.

The only exception to this policy is if school is canceled on Friday. In this case, Friday’s menu will be completely canceled and we will continue with the regular menu on Monday.  Information on what menu will be served on the day you return will be available on Twitter or the foodservice web page at www.jenhudfood.org. Please feel free to contact the food service department at 457-2400 if you have any questions or are unsure of what the menu will be. Thank you! ~ Stacey L. Wykoski, Food Service Director

OFFICE NEWS……. Well here we are, back from Holiday Break.  Man that sure did go by fast!!  With that being said, we have all managed to get right back in to the swing of things here at Alward.  It has been quite a low key week….. just the way we like them!  : )  Things are looking pretty quiet on the Alward calendar for the next couple of months, so sit back, relax and enjoy the down time.  Before we know it the craziness will start up again!

EARLY RELEASE…… Our next early release is FRIDAY, JANUARY 13!!

SCHOOL MESSENGER EMAILS…… Parents if you feel like you have been missing some important emails from Alward….. please check your SPAM!!!  It seems as though the past few emails I have sent from the office through School Messenger some people have not been receiving.  Once I spoke with a few parents and staff we discovered they were going to their SPAM!  I have checked with our Technology Dept and there is not anything they can do on their end to resolve this.  Technology has received complaints from other schools as well that this has been happening.  The only thing they can think of is that individual email’s have changed their securities have become more strict.  So….. if you check your SPAM and this is where you find these emails you will need to mark them as “NOT SPAM” in order for them to be delivered to your “inbox”.  Technology also mentioned that you may need to do this a couple of times for it to take affect.  So keep checking  : )

ALWARD ACTION 12/21/16

imgres

OFFICE NEWS……. Wow….. is all I can say!  What a crazy week and a half it has been since our last Alward Action!  I am not sure we have ever had as many days of inside recess due to the cold!  It was hard on everyone!  The kids just feel if there is snow they should be able to be outside and play in it!  Darn the luck!  Thankfully the last couple of days they were able to get outside and play.  Holiday parties went off without a hitch and thanks goes to the PTC for organizing these and providing the volunteers who sign parents in and out for these.  : )  Miss Doni really appreciates their help with this!  We hope you all enjoy the little break we have coming and take time to spend with your kids and families!!  Enjoy the season and cherish all of the memories to be made.  : )

EAGLE’S LANDING GIFT BASKET RAFFLE……. Every year the High School Students from the Eagle’s Landing store organize and provide a gift basket for every school in the district!!  It is simply amazing what these students pull off every year!!  Here at Alward we do a raffle drawing and draw one lucky student and their family as the big winners.  It is such a fun thing to do and incredibly exciting!  Mrs. Moore always takes the gift basket (actually a sled packed full of gifts) in to the lunchroom the day prior to the raffle to show the students what will be raffled.  It is so fun to see and here their excitement.  Once the family has been drawn we contact the parent/s and ask them to come for the presentation.  We were able to pull this off as a huge surprise this week on Tuesday morning!  Mrs. Moore made the exciting announcement over the intercom and called the student to the crossroads to make the presentation.  All the classrooms get to come out in the hall to see and we were very fortunate to have a bunch of the students who work at Eagle’s Landing here as well!!  It was sooooo cool!!  Our winning student this year was…….. JEROME SMITH!!  Woot ~ Woot!  Merry Christmas to Jerome and his family!!!

SNOW DAY PROCEDURE FOR HOT LUNCH ~ With snow just around the corner, the food service program would like to remind parents and students about what will happen if school is closed due to weather. If the district is closed, the menu that was supposed to be served on the snow day will be moved to the next school day.  An example: if school is canceled on Tuesday due to weather, Tuesday’s menu will be served on Wednesdayand the menu that was scheduled for Wednesday will be completely canceled.  Because of our computer lunch account system, there will be no need to issue credits and your student will still be able to order a lunch if they need one.
