NEWS FROM THE OFFICE……. Hello Alward Families!!  Sorry for the delay in getting the Alward Action out!  It seems I took a little hiatus and was not able to get it down before I darted out for a brief vacation.  Oops  : )  So this one is crammed full of new information!  Enjoy your light reading  : )


Exciting times await our Alward families.  With the passage of the August 2015 Bond Proposal, a considerable amount of site and building improvements will be forthcoming for Alward Elementary.  The construction will take place in phases.  The first phase will consist of site improvements. Bus and parent traffic will be separated with new traffic flow patterns.  The new bus loop will be located east of Alward with an expanded students/parent drop of west of the building.  To accomplish this new site in time for the beginning of next school year, we will have to begin work as early as next month.  Excavation and removal of soil and sand will take place next month and continue through June.
The new building construction will take place during next school year.  While this will create some inconveniences and limit some of the play spaces, we appreciate and are excited for what will prove to be a beautiful new and renovated Alward Elementary.  Please stay tuned for additional information regarding construction information.

GENERAL OFFICE INFORMATION……… A special request from Miss Doni in the office…. this time of year we have a lot of absences/illnesses at school.  It is extremely helpful when students are called in each day if they will be absent/late.  It can take a lot of additional time to make phone calls for attendance purposes for those students who are not accounted for.  We do this for the safety of all our students, as we want to make sure they are safe, sound and accounted for if they are not at school.  When leaving a message for your student, PLEASE leave details as to the reason for the absence (symptoms of illness, etc.,  as I have to report illnesses to the Health Dept EVERY Friday).  Thank you so much for your help with this.  I really do appreciate it and it DOES save me a lot of time.

Next week please watch for Spring Conference letters to come home with your students.  Remember you will be scheduled for the SAME DAY/TIME  as you were scheduled for in the fall. Ideally these letters will be coming home on Wednesday, February 24.  We just wanted to make sure you were watching for these as our Spring Parent/Teacher Conferences will be held March 7, 9 and 10.  Believe it or not, this is just around the corner.

IN-DISTRICT TRANSFER AND SCHOOL OF CHOICE REQUESTS……  If your student/students are currently an In-District Transfer or School of Choice to Alward, please read the following information in regards to having to re-submit these requests. Within the attached letter you can see the district letter that was sent out by Superintendent, Dr. Nick Ceglarek on January 15, check the new attendance areas and go to Hudsonville Public School’s website to get the new In-District Transfer Request and the School of Choice Request.  Thank you!  Link for Parents


PK and KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION…..PK and Kindergarten registrations are NOW available in the office.  Kindergarten Round Up will be held on TUESDAY, MARCH 1 at 7pm.  If you will not be available for the evening session there will be a morning Round Up meeting at South Elementary at 10am.  You may come in at any time to pick up the registration packet or you can get it at Kindergarten Round Up.  Just a few reminders when turning in the registration packets, I will need to see the original birth certificate with the raised seal from the state, I will make a copy for our records.  We cannot accept the birth “announcement” from the hospital.  The child is also required to have vision and hearing checked.  This can be done at the health department or your doctor’s office.  The last major item needed is the child’s immunization record.  Every student must be current on all immunizations.  As a district, and statewide as well, we are able to deny entry for not being up to date on immunizations.  If immunization waivers are needed these MUST come from the health department.

5th GRADE NEWS……… Parents of 5th graders…… are you ready for this???  The rest of this school year is going to fly by for you and your 5th grader.  They have so much going on and many things coming up to prepare them for middle school.  Please pay close attention to his section of the Alward Action as this is where important dates, etc will be listed for the 5th graders.  Please remember, as well, if you have any questions feel free to email your student’s teacher.  So here are some dates to get on your calendars.  : )

MARCH 10…. 5th Grade visits Baldwin Street Middle School.

MARCH 24….. Middle School Administrators and Counselors will be at Alward in the am to visit with our 5th graders.

MARCH 24…… Music Department visits the 5th graders here at Alward.

APRIL 13…… Instrumental Music Parent Meeting at 7pm at Baldwin Street Middle School (if you are unable to go on the 13th you may attend Riley’s meeting on 4/14 @ 7pm)

APRIL 15…… 6th grade course selection sheets come home with your student.

APRIL 29….. 6th grade course selections sheets are DUE back to their 5th grade teacher.

MAY 16……. 6th Grade Orientation for parents and students at Baldwin Street Middle School at 7pm.

June 2-3……. 5th grade camp!!

GIRL SCOUT TROUP 4073……. The girls of Girl Scout Troop 4073 are working on a project to help kids entering into foster care as their project to earn their Bronze Award and they need your help.  They are working to create foster care kits that are made up of duffel bags, pillows, personal care items, small stuffed animals, small games, puzzle books, etc.  These are things that they often have to leave behind when they are placed into foster care and can help make the transition easier for them.  They would like to create 50 of these kits to donate to local foster care groups to distribute to kids that need them.  Donations can be made at ALWARD through February 26th.  Specific items needed are Med/Lg duffel bags (new or next to new), pillows (new), small stuffed animals (new or next to new), toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, hair brushes, hair ties, small games, word finds, yo-yo’s, colored pencils.  Thank-you for your support.  There is a collection box located in the lobby at Alward.

LIBRARY NEWS………unnamed WARM UP TO READING COUNTS!…… Does a warm cup of hot chocolate with marshmallows sound good to you?   Then, get reading!  From Feb. 22 – March 4 Mrs. Fellows will treat 10 students from each grade (3-5) that pass the most RC quizzes (chapter books only).  * YUMMY HOT CHOCOLATE WITH MRS. FELLOWS ON THURSDAY, MARCH 10!   **You MUST take/pass quizzes that are in, or around your reading level.**   This only counts for books read this year.  : )


PTC NEWS………  imgres-1SPRING CARNIVAL NEEDS YOU!!!…….  Please read the attached flyer in regards to parents and students, 6th grade and up, needed to volunteer for the carnival!  You are not required to work the entire carnival, there are two shifts to choose from.  Please do what you can to help out, Alward’s Carnival is the BEST and we cannot make it happen without the volunteers! COMMUNITY NEWS………. ALICE IN WONDERLAND AUDITIONS…….imgres TOMORROW, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 20!! Riley Street Middle School is putting together a production of “Disney’s Alice in Wonderland Jr.” that goes onstage on April 22 and 23.  A chorus of elementary students will be included in the production. imagesHEAT WATER POLO……..  We are having our Parent & Player Meeting this Monday, 2/22 at 7:00 PM at the new competitive pool.  We are holding this meeting earlier this year to allow for suit ordering lead times.  Your player should come prepared to try on a suit so that you can ensure that you are ordering the correct size (bring a swimsuit so you can try one of the test swimsuits on over the top).

CHILDREN’S SPRING CLOTHING SALE……… The Heritage Christian School Spring Children’s Clothing Sale will be held on Saturday, March 12 from 9:00 – 12:00. Items  include infant to teen clothing, outdoor/indoor toys, books, games, shoes, baby equipment, maternity, and more. Delicious baked goods are also for sale. Located in the large gym at Heritage Christian at 6340 Autumn Dr., Hudsonville. Very organized sale with lots of room to shop. Hope to see you there!

GMB/EAGLE 5K…..The Hudsonville Athletic Boosters are presenting the GMB/ Eagle 5k on March 26, 2016 at 9am. The event will take place at Hudsonville High School with a NEW  route running through the city of Hudsonville. Special guest speaker this year will be Jim Dreyer speaking at 8:30am in the gym. This year we are proud to have Jim Dreyer as our guest speaker prior to the race. The open water, Jim’s greatest fear since a childhood near-drowning, has become the playing field for much of his unprecedented athletic success. Controlling fear and harnessing “Cornerstone Strength in the Face of Burden” is the subject of his inspirational presentations on the speaker’s circuit.
