OFFICE NEWS……. Wow! What a FANTASTIC week here at Alward!  As many of you know, March is “Reading Month” AND it is Dr. Seuss’ birthday.  In honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday, students met in their Character Ed teams (groups of K-5th grade students and an Alward Staff Leader) to decorate classroom, office, and library doors throughout the building.  The doors look AMAZING as the students and staff did a spectacular job!  It is fun to walk through the halls and see the creative designs on the doors, and be reminded that Alward is a community of readers.  Way to go Alward students!!

Along with decorating the doors, we are celebrating “March is Reading Month” by having the students bring in new and/or gently used books to benefit local children in need.  We are doing this in hopes of sharing the gift of reading with others in our community.  The book drive will run from MARCH 3-MARCH 24.   The Character Ed team that donates the most books will get a special celebration….. so bring in those books!!!


EARLY RELEASE…… Our next early release is FRIDAY, MARCH 10.  This time will be used by teachers for professional development and professional conversations in regard to meeting the needs of all students.

PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES……. are fast approaching!!  These will be held on Monday, March 13 and Wednesday, March 15 from 5:30p-8p, and on Thursday, March 16 from 4:00p-6:30pm.  Conference date/time reminders came home with your student/s this week.  It should be the same day/time as you were scheduled for Fall Conferences.  PLEASE REMEMBER to RETURN these conference slips to your student’s teacher NO LATER than TUESDAY, MARCH 7.  Thank you  : )

M-STEP TESTING FOR GRADES 3-5…..  To the parents of 3rd – 5th grade students.  M-Step testing is fast approaching.  With that being said, we would like to get the testing dates out to you in hopes of having all the students in school on the days of testing.  We ask for your help in not scheduling appointments or pulling your student if at all possible on these testing dates.  Our hopes are that with giving you these dates in advance that will help all of us.  Thank you for your cooperation in regards to these testing dates.

KINDERGARTEN INFORMATION……… PK/Kindergarten Registration packets are available in the office.  In order for the registration packets to be turned back in you must have all of the information needed.  The items that are required are listed on the front cover letter of the Registration packet.  Please be sure to turn these in as soon as possible.



5th GRADE NEWS……… Here are some important dates that you will want to have on your calendars for your 5th graders.  Please make sure to get the PARENT INFORMATION MEETING DATE, as this is an informative meeting for the parents.

APRIL 25 ~ 5th Grade visits Baldwin Street Middle (transportation is provided, students/teachers only)

APRIL 28 ~ Instrument Fittings (Band/Orchestra instructors come and fit students to instruments to see what they may be interested in)

MAY 15 ~ Parent Information Meeting @ Baldwin Street Middle School at 7:00pm in the cafeteria.


PTC NEWS….. FIVE BELOW FUNDRAISER…… Starting Monday, March 6  through Sunday, March 12 if you shop at Five Below in Grandville 10% of your sales will be donated back to Alward!!  This is an easy way to help show your support for Alward.  Please read the attached flyer with all of the details.  You must take the flyer with you in order for the % to be donated back to Alward.  Five Below Fundraiser

 PRE-SALE CARNIVAL TICKETS……… Tickets for the Carnival will be “Pre-Sale” next week ONLY.   Staring Monday you may turn in the attached flyer for Pre-Sale Carnival tickets.  If you buy them next week they will be 5 for $1.00.  Day of the Carnival the tickets are 4/$1.00.  All games take between 1 and 2 tickets.  Flyers will come home with students on Monday as well.  Forms must be turned in NO LATER than FRIDAY, MARCH 10.   Carnival Ticket Pre-Sale

NEEDS FOR THE FOLLOWING YEAR CARNIVAL…… (but need to shadow in this year’s Carnival!) WE NEED two people to shadow Julie Snider this year with the plan on Co-Chairing the Spring Carnival in 2018….these people would be responsible for scheduling volunteers and coordinating the carnival sub committees.  REMEMBER, carnival has A LOT of Chairs!  Thus, these two people need to OVERSEE the operations.  Many hands make light work……are YOU willing to CO-Chair Carnival?  We don’t want this to be the last carnival so PLEASE VOLUNTEER!!! EAGLE 5K…….. The Hudsonville Athletic Boosters are presenting the GMB/ Eagle ” Brian Carlson Memorial Run” on March 25, 2017 at 9am. The event will take place at Hudsonville High School with the route running through the city of Hudsonville. Special guest speaker this year will be Rebecca

Cruttenden speaking at 8:30am in the gym. Rebecca is the founder and director of theTeam Orphans and the owner of Clara Cookies. She is also a mother of three adopted children and a 6 time Ironman finisher. Be sure to check her out on our website. SPRING GIRLS LACROSSE……Registration is now open for the Hudsonville Youth Lacrosse Spring Season!  Girls -Grades 5-8th will play for Hudsonville against teams from other communities in a Spring outdoor season.
-Practices begin Late-March, Games begin after Spring Break (no practices over Spring Break).
-New players are welcome.  This is a great time to start playing the fast-growing sport of lacrosse.
